The Valkyrians

Question: Can you introduce yourself, please?

Angster: I'm Angster, the Leadsinger of the Valkyrians.

Question: What does the band name "The Valkyrians" mean?

Angster: It's some girls who are riding horses and carrying dead people home.

Question: How come?

Angster: It's a mythological thing. It's like in Ska music - like Trojan Record have it - wearing helmet and we have that like a nordern art of mythology and we think these girls are quite good.

Question: How was the reaction of your last album?

Angster: It was good. In Finland we were in the charts. In the single charts we were for a month in top ten, the first single, and the album went to 24 I think. So it was a good compliment.

Question: And in Germany?

Angster: It just came out. This album has to be released by now, in the last day of March. We don't know the situation in Germany yet, because we've just started touring here. But the audience have been good.

Question: Do you like the German audience"

Angster: Yes, yes. They've been taking us very well, I think.

Question: How is he collaboration with your Label Pork Pie?

Angster: We played in Berlin last Monday and we had a great time and it went very late. We partied with the Pork Pie people and we had one day off. I had to sleep very much. Yes, great people. Pork Pie is brilliant.

Question: How did you come together"

Angster: Our record company man and our Reggae man came to Germany, I think it was September and they met. Our Reggae producer and our DJ were here and they met the people from Pork Pie.

Wolle: So the contact came from the Local Manager and the calles us: "Don't you wanna come to Helsinki" The Valkyrians will come here!" And we thought: "Yeah, cool!"

Angster: Because I knew Skaos before and I thought Pork Pie is cool.

Question: What do you think about the traditional Ska"

Angster: I Like it. I like to do the traditional Ska and Rock Steady and Reggae and then 2tone, also Punkrock, when it was mixed. That's our band's favourite thing.

Question: How big is the ska scene in Finland"

Angster: It's growing now, but before there has never been a big Ska scene. Nowadays there are 700 people in a gig.

Wolle: He showed me the newspaper from the evening we played in Helsinki, a very popular newspaper, and there was one whole page explaining what Ska is and how to dance.

Angster: They are really interested, because our album was Ska music and people didn't really know what it is and now we're finished with the tour and we have a bigger audience and they like it, because they have been mixed in several gigs

Question: How important was the success in the Finish charts"

Angster: We were very surprised, because we had no expectations in that. I didn't really believe that it's going to be on the list and not on 24. Usually it's more the mainstream artists and now it's kind of alternative music, so it was a big surprise. Of course we were happy, we get more gigs now.

Question: Did it change anything"

Angster: We have more gigs.

Wolle: And more beer.

Angster: Yeah. And we had to get a little more organized. Usually we haven't been very organized.

Question: What was the last album you bought"

Angster: Actually I bought a vinyl single, it wasn't an album. It was this bam bam bam (sings) (editorial annotation: He turns around and asks his band colleagues something on finish. They also start to sing.) It was Nancy Sister and the song is "Bam bam", it's an American woman, it's great and I actually bought it for my girlfriend. It's really good. And the last album" It was a DJ, I think. I don't really remember.

Question: What kind of music do you listen to"

Angster: All sorts of music. But I like old music from the 60s, from 65 to 69 in Jamaica for example. I like some Popmusic, but I've been listening to lots of kind of music.

Question: Which beer would you recommend while listening to your music"

Angster: I don't remember, when we played yesterday... I think the place was called Goslar and at the place we stayed at night there were nice people keeping the hotel. When we came late at night they recommended a beer, which is the best beer in the world. I took a picture of it. Maybe we can check it in the camera. So I recommend it now. But there is a Jamaican beer, Red Stripe, that's good. But you better know when it's getting hot Red stripe it the best Reggae summer drink and the other one is the best for a winter Ska drink.

Question: Okay, thank you.

Angster: Thank you!
